Patients need to understand the risks and complications associated with a medical procedure so they can make an informed decision. The Texas Medical Disclosure Panel, which develops disclosure language, is supposed to help patients; however, this panel currently only consists of doctors and lawyers. HB 148 by Rep. Julie Johnson requires the Texas Medical Disclosure Panel to actually include members from the public.
Many Texans pay extra to protect themselves if they are hit by a driver with no insurance or too little insurance. A wrongly-decided Texas Supreme Court decision lets insurance companies force you to go to court before they have to pay on these types of auto claims. That makes no sense. Insurance companies are in the business of assessing fault, determining damages, and paying claims.
Insurance companies prey on vulnerable Texans. After a wreck, they often swoop in and try to get you to settle on the cheap before you know the full extent of your damages and medical costs. HB 150 by Rep. Julie Johnson fixes this, stopping "swoop and settle" insurance schemes!

The Office of Public Insurance Counsel (OPIC) released its Report to the 88th Texas Legislature: Recommendations Report, which advocates for a consumer's right to invoke an appraisal in auto policies. OPIC's report states, "OPIC is increasingly concerned with restrictions on appraisal in policy forms filed by top insurers.
